1874: Vsevelod Meyerhold, director, born (murdered 1940)

1904: The Russian fleet almost totally destroyed by Japan's surprise attack on the fleet at Port Arthur, Manchuria (present day Lüshunkou, China).

1923: Dobrolet, the Soviet airline, was formed. It was renamed Aeroflot in 1932.

1934: Yuri Koval, writer, born (died 1995)

1984: General Secretary Yuri Andropov died

1991: In national referendum, more than 90% of Lithuanians vote in favor of independence.
